Colombia stunned Germany with a last-minute winner by Manuela Vanegas at the FIFA Women’s World Cup on Sunday at the Allianz Stadium, Australia.

This was Germany’s first group-stage defeat at the World Cup since 1995.

The game started evenly as both teams failed to open the scoring during the first half.

However, just seven minutes after the second half kicked off, Colombia’s Linda Caceido — an 18-year-old wonder kid — scored one of the best goals of the tournament by curling the ball into the top corner which shocked not only the Germans but everyone in the stadium.

The Colombians defended their lead until the 89th minute before Germany’s Lena Oberdorf was taken down by goalkeeper Catalina Perez in the box.

Alexandra Popp converted her penalty without any difficulty by sending Catalina the wrong way to put the Germans back in the game with just one minute plus additional time to play.

The Germans might have thought that it is over but that’s not what the South Americans were thinking.

They continued to show their resilience and eventually, ended up scoring a winner with a fantastic and well-placed header in the 96th minute from a corner.

Vanegas’ headed goal ensured Colombia’s victory and now they just need a point in their final game to top the group.

On the other hand, the Germans may even need a victory to ensure their safe passage to the knockout stages.

"Obviously, you need to be happy and euphoric because this is a great win for the whole country and we've been feeling this," said Colombia assistant coach Angelo Marsiglia.

"But look, the game and the tournament still continues so we'll go step by step. We have a very mature team and they know what they want."

Germany’s defeat was more concerning because they did not only lose the in football aspects but were also heavily outplayed in the physical aspect of the game.

"It's up to us," said Germany coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg. "It's up to us how we play and it's our job to do that. I'm really not worried that we won't make it through."
